Patient and Knowledgeable SAT ACT Preparation Expert

I am passionate about helping students succeed by improving grades and understanding in academic classes and increasing their test scores as much as possible. I graduated from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) with high honors and a degree in Biochemistry. I then went on to complete graduate coursework and passed the CPA exam (arguably one of the most difficult tests out there). Currently, I am enrolled in the University of California Irvine (UCI) College Counseling Certificate pr... [more]

Algebra 1

I love math and I love to teach it to students. I believe that becoming proficient in math at lower levels, by building a strong foundation, tremendously helps students gain understanding, confidence, and helps them succeed in their educational goals. I have worked with students at different levels from elementary school to college and I love to witness that "aha" moment!

Algebra 2

Certification test test passed with 100% score! The purpose of math, more than any other subject, is to increase logic and ability to make decisions. Algebra 2 is where you build upon the foundation established in Algebra 1. Topics include linear and quadratic equations, functions and inverses, graphing and translating, exponents, radicals and logarithms. I can help you with these. So much of Math is an application of functions and a good knowledge of Algebra will serve you well and provide an excellent foundation if you go on to take Trigonometry, Precalculus and Calculus.

Vocabulary

Spelling and vocabulary are building blocks to clear, effective writing and communication. I have helped students improve their writing and communication clarity through gaining a strong vocabulary.

Grammar

I have studied and taught grammar for many years. I am familiar with all the grammar concepts that students need to write and communicate clearly. I teach grammar by reviewing rules and then putting them into practice with lots of exercises and practical application through the student's writing.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using the Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) since they came out. My familiarity with Microsoft Office applications has made me the go-to person with friends and colleagues who have questions, ranging from the most basic (how do I save a file?) to the more advanced. I love helping people unlock the power of computers.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is a word processing software application that enables you do easily create both simple and complex documents, such as memos or reports. Microsoft Word provides tools to enable you to check spelling of your document, create merge letters and add graphics to enhance your written information. Microsoft Word is used for creating documents such as letters, brochures, learning activities, tests, quizzes and students' homework assignments. I have been using Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint) for many years and have been able to show methods and shortcuts to students who use this tool for completion of their assignments.

Prealgebra

I love math and I love to teach it to students. I believe that becoming proficient in math at lower levels, by building a strong foundation, tremendously helps students gain understanding, confidence, and helps them succeed in their educational goals. I have worked with students at different levels from elementary school to college and I love to witness that "aha" moment!

Reading

I believe excellent readers make excellent writers. Throughout my tutoring career I have taught students techniques for faster reading and better comprehension. Reading also expands students' vocabulary which, in turn, makes their writing much more descriptive, i.e. they learn to "show" not "tell".

Writing

Throughout my tutoring career I have taught students how to write clear, effective essays on a variety of subjects. In this fast-paced technology saturated world, the students are losing their ability to communicate in writing while many organizations place an ever increasing value on this skill. I work with students from elementary to high school. With elementary school students I focus on phonetics, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure, and with my high school and college students I focus on helping students craft the best essays they can for their classes and their college and graduate school applications.

It isn't easy, it requires perfection and time commitment, but if you are willing to work hard, I can help you reach toward the perfect 800. I help you by understanding your weaknesses (time management or content); doing practice problems and understanding every single mistake; filling math concept gaps; active, not passive learning of the mistakes; maximizing your score by saving time; eliminating careless mistakes; and mastering EVERY Math skill (even the rare ones).

GRE

I have been a GRE tutor for 5 years, and have helped many students go to the graduate program of their dreams. My background is in Math and Science I can provide strong support in all areas of the test. My patient and friendly attitude helps older students, who have not been in a math class for a while, identify content areas that need extra attention as well as learn strategies that will help them succeed on test day.

Proofreading

GED

The GED Mathematics Test tests students' knowledge of arithmetic, algebra and geometry. Many questions are posed as sentence problems so that students will need to understand concepts in these statements. The test is divided into halves, the first half allowing the use of a calculator and the other not allowing the use of the calculator. In the past several years, I have helped numerous GED candidates (MINORS & ADULTS) to study, take, and successfully pass the GED Mathematics Test, which measures high school level skills and knowledge. This has given them an opportunity to feel a great sense of accomplishment as it opened opportunities for them to enter college.

SAT Reading

I can help you get the best possible score on the SAT Reading! It's not easy, it requires a lot of practice, but if you are willing to put in an effort, I can help you reach towards the perfect 800! SAT Reading is designed to trick you. I help you understand how. Each question has one, unambiguously, 100% correct answer. All you have to do is find 4 incorrect answers and eliminate them. I will show you the types of questions SAT has; tips, tricks and strategies to help you eliminate the incorrect answers and achieve the best possible score!

SAT Writing

Students do not have to be grammar experts to do well on the SAT writing section. They need to know the 10 major grammar rules that are featured on the SAT. I help students focus on these 10 rules as well as the difference between an SAT essay and a school essay to increase their scores. I believe that a student at any level of writing ability can improve from my methodical approach to SAT writing.

TOEFL

I have first hand experience with taking and passing the TOEFL exam. This gives my students the benefit of my intimate knowledge of the exam, not just knowledge and fluency in English language. I have helped many students prepare and improve their test scores and gain admission to their dream colleges.

PSAT

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the United States. The PSAT serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), and measures critical reading skills, mathematics problem solving skills and writing skills. The PSAT serves as a good indicator of student performance on SAT. I have tutored many students in PSAT as well as all sections of the SAT and I have worked with many students who have a National Merit distinction on their high school diploma and several who have actually won the National Merit Scholarship to the University of their choice.

Spelling

Spelling and vocabulary are building blocks to clear, effective writing and communication. Some kids are natural spellers, some are not, but one thing is absolutely clear, spelling CAN be learned. Poorly spelled writing appears sloppy and is frequently disregarded. I have helped students improve presentation of their writing and communication through learning strong spelling.

ACT Reading

The ACT Reading Test give you 35 minutes to read four rather lengthy passages and answer 40 questions on the passages. Because you have little time to do a lot of work, time is really of the essence on the Reading Test. Becoming familiar with the format and content of this Subject Test before you actually have to take it will help you use your time efficiently and effectively. Each of the four passages is approximately 750 words long and presented in two columns. Each passage is directly followed by 10 questions of varying difficulty, making a total of 40 questions on the Reading Test. The ACT includes a number of different types of questions in each batch of 10. The Reading Test consists of four passages: Prose Fiction, Social Science, Humanities, and Natural Science?always appearing in that order. Prose Fiction is the only fiction passage on the test; the other three are nonfiction. All four passages are given equal weight in scoring. Of the 4 subject tests, it is most difficult to prepare for the Reading Test. Doing well on the Reading Test is not a matter of having tricks up your sleeve. When you come to a question that asks about a passage?s main point, you can?t rely on some handy main-point trick to figure out the answer?either you know it or you don?t. That said, I teach students strategies to improve their performance on the test and how to maximize time by choosing the order of passages you read / answer questions for. The main part of the strategy is your ability to read well?that is, with speed and without sacrificing comprehension. The best way to prepare for the Reading test is to READ!!!

ACT English

The ACT English test assesses your knowledge of English grammar and writing. On the test, you will have 45 minutes to answer 75 questions. That may seem like a large number of questions and relatively little time, but the English Test, more than any other ACT Subject Test, assesses what you already know, rather than what you can figure out if you are given certain information. Essentially, this means you can be completely prepared for the English Test if you study all the material it covers. I help students learn, understand and become confident in usage / mechanics questions; rhetorical skills question and the any other material covered by the ACT English portion.

ACT Math

On the ACT Math test, you are given 60 minutes to answer 60 questions. In terms of time allotted per question, the Math Test ranks the highest among the subject tests, averaging one minute per question. ACT tests you on knowledge that you?ve learned, not just intuited. The Math Test covers the material taught in your middle school and high school math classes. Those classes covered a lot of ground, and in order to do well on this test, you have to have a good fundamental grasp of math topics. I help students understand the format and content of the test, question types, strategies for guessing, basic problems and word problems, etc. My students and I review all of the necessary math concepts (as determined by the diagnostic test) because even if you?re dominating your math class this year, you?ll benefit from a full review because the material covered on this test is quite broad and can reach back to the math you studied in seventh grade. Those subjects aren?t hard, but they may cover minor details that you?ve forgotten?and which could be important on the test. I have had much success helping students achieve scores in the high 30's (33-36) and I would love the opportunity to help you too!

College Counseling

I have a College Counseling Certificate from UCI. Each student is different, so I get to know each student on a personal level to prepare an individualized college admission plan, not a "cookie cutter" one. I have worked with many students with planning their high school curriculum with their "target" college in mind; strategically choosing colleges; staying "on-top" of many college admissions deadlines; preparing best possible application packages; writing eloquent and polished personal statements, and applying for financial aid. Statistics show that most students apply to an average of 15 colleges and once there do no graduate in 4 years. Once admitted to college, I coach students how to choose classes, schedule study time and "free" time, be successful and graduate as close as possible to the 4 year mark.
