Reading

I teach reading with very natural techniques such as reading aloud to children, shared reading, and shadow reading. This helps students learn to use expression and to understand punctuation. To build fluency. I also teach phonics skills and help students acquire sight word recognition. When tutoring to build reading comprehension skills I help students to identify the main idea and details, use context clues, ask clarifying questions, make inferences, and draw conclusions. Note taking and graphic organizers are also ways that I encourage students to monitor and evaluate what they are reading.

Writing

I am a retired teacher with a current California credential. I have a good grasp of grammar and essay writing, and I am an English-only speaker. For 22 years I taught elementary school as a Resource Specialist, working with students with learning disabilities. Once the writing purpose or genre of writing is identified, I teach students how to begin their writing by using a graphic organizer. Having a visual map of what will be written makes writing a much less daunting task and keeps one's focus on the topic.

Elementary (K-6th)

Phonics

I am qualified to teach phonics skills because I have worked as a certificated teacher (resource specialist) at the elementary level for 22 years. I have assisted many students in learning phonics skills. Learning phonics enables students to improve their decoding, reading fluency, and reading comprehension.

Study Skills

I am qualified to teach study skills through my teaching certificate as a Resource Specialist, and my 22 years experience working full time in that position for a large school district in the Bay Area. I have a great deal of experience with helping students improve their study skills and organizational skills. I worked with students to improve their skills of filling in assignment sheets, writing down homework assignments, and completing and turning in assignments on time. I have helped students with time management issues and daily schedules. To improve study skills I taught my students note taking strategies, and to determine the key words, main idea, and supporting details in expository reading material. Strategies such as using mnemonics, use of visual timelines, and illustrations worked effectively with many of my students to help them comprehend and internalize material they were studying. Teaching students to summarize in their own words what they have read, seen, heard, or physically done has been an effective study strategy. To help students study narrative text and improve comprehension I of subject matter, I have used guided reading techniques, writing, art, and retelling techniques. Discussion of material read and making important connections between text and self are techniques I have taught students to improve study skills.
