As a speech-language pathologist, phonological awareness was a significant component of my coursework in undergraduate and graduate school. Phonological awareness and phonics skill building are routinely incorporated into the therapy services I provide to children with language disorders and/or reading disorders. From October 2003-June 2005, I was responsible for the implementation of a grant-funded enhancement program offered to schools in Manhasset, N.Y. I designed and delivered early literacy curriculum to preschool directors and teachers in the Manhasset community. I have also learned a specific reading approach (Barton Reading and Spelling System), which I use with many of my students. This method greatly benefits children who require an intensive, explicit, and multi-sensory approach for learning phonics and reading. In addition, in order to maintain my license as a SLP, I have taken many continuing education courses that focus on phonics and literacy.
