I have been in the computer field for many years and whenever I have needed to teach someone I have been rewarded with comments that I made it easy to understand concepts that they thought were going to be insurmountable. Many of my courses have been video taped and made available through the public library systems. It makes me feel great to know that I have passed down the knowledge once given to me by sitting in many classes many years ago. Where possible I have spoken with my teacher... [more]
I learned the C language by myself by reading thru code listings of all applications in V7 unix. Later I perfected my coding by reading thru the well known book Kernigan and Richie (Spelling). I also learned all the ins and outs of the linux OS by reading every line of code in the V7 unix kernel. I have also written code in C while working on government projects over the past 30 years.
This subject can have many meanings. In teaching this subject there is no one language taught. I teach the concepts to determine what needs to be done and how to accomplish that. It can be anything from writing Shell scripts that call upon other apps like awk, lex, yacc, sed, perl, python, and many others. I also include OS concepts such as system events, system startup scripts, and the cron program.
I have been using Linux since it was first released. I know the complete Linux kernel, and how its used on many variants of Unix including Cygwin, RedHat, RHEL, RtLinux, Ubuntu, Debian, SunOS, Netbsd, BSDI, Ultrix and many others. I have taught beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes on how to use Linux for the beginner, and how to use the hundreds of available applications for the advanced developer.
I teach beginners enough so that they are more confident on using Microsoft Windows (all versions) to read and send email, cut and paste operations, storing pictures and movies from their cameras and how to attach them to emails for sending to others. How to use MS paint, calculator, notepad, wordpad. How to connect printers via USB and via Ethernet, and how to send to them. For those more advanced I can teach MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Access. For the very advanced, I can teach how to add programs to Excel Spreadsheet cells.
I've been using VB ver 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0 since they were released by Microsoft. I have released many VB6 apps to the net, and have taught VB6 to high school students and evenings in a local adult education program.
