I have been tutoring for four years in several subjects, both for community service and for pay. While I am not planning to go into education, I truly enjoy getting to know my students, and I hope that they feel my service benefits them as well. Through an intense love of literature, I have developed an extensive vocabulary, which only expanded when I began studying for the SAT in high school. I have always loved English literature, and I enjoy sharing my passion for words with others (I've even taught my mother, a Brown University graduate, a number of vocabulary words she'd never heard before). Although I'm often a firm believer in developing new, original study methods, I believe that vocabulary is often best learned through flash cards. I do, however, encourage students to make connections between different words, which has been helpful for me when learning new vocabulary.
I am the Copy Chief of my college's newspaper, Student Life, and I pride myself on my ability to correct grammar. In high school, I helped tutor students who had just started learning English, and we focused significantly on grammar rules. Additionally, I received a perfect score on the ACT's English section, which tests a student's grammar knowledge.
As an undergraduate editor for my college newspaper, Student Life, I have written over forty published articles on a wide variety of topics. In high school, I served as Editor-in-Chief of my school paper, and I was responsible for editing all of the paper's content. In addition to my work as an editor, I was also paid to write test tip articles. I have also won a number of writing contests, and I have been tutoring students in writing for four years.
I am an undergraduate editor for my college newspaper and have never received lower than an "A" in an English class throughout my years in school. Throughout high school and college, I have edited my peers' papers for them upon request. I received perfect scores on the English and Reading portions of the ACT. I've also won multiple writing contests, including a journalism award in high school.
