Tutor in Royal Oak - Learn Math and Science from a Computer Engineer

General Experience: I enjoy tutoring and helping students feel good about themselves so they perform better at school. Those who know me say that I relate extremely well to people and that they quickly feel at ease with me. I always strive to make subject matter relevant, interesting, and understandable. The people skills that I acquired over the years have made me a pro at motivating those I interact with. Parents who have sought my help usually say that I?m an excellent tutor and that t... [more]

Algebra 1

I have taught Algebra and a variety of other math subjects at the High School level. I also have over 10 years experience with teaching Business Math and Economics at the college level. Algebra is at the core of of the analytical tools in all of these topics. Finally, I spent over 11 years in Banking and Insurance using Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics in real world application to perform the essential calculations which allow these industries to manage risk and achieve profitability.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring Algebra 2 for more than 10 years and consistently receive high ratings from students and their parents. I have never had a student or parent who was not 100% satisfied. I also tutor Geometry, Pre-Calc and Pre-Calculus, so I am able to focus not only on the immediate needs of the students, but also focus on concepts that really matter going forward.

Geometry is made up of theorems and postulates, inductive and deductive reasoning. This can seem daunting to the student who is not familiar to the subject. As students progress they realize that the theorems and postulates help them solve the problems in the particular area of geometry the rule applies. My expertise is to make student get so comfortable with the subject they actually find geometry enjoyable.

With all Algebra classes, I capitalize on your strengths and cut out the useless fluff. If your teacher?s method doesn?t work for you, we find something that does and get you feeling confident with practice. In total, I have 6 years of experience tutoring students in Math from the middle school to high school level. During college, I worked at the Mathnasium Tutoring Center and learned many of the "Mental Math" tricks and shortcuts they taught. Over the years, I?ve developed several other tricks and shortcuts across the board to help my students with the tougher concepts, like factoring, operations of exponents, and logarithms. You are coming to the right place if your high school student is having trouble with the problem-solving method given in class or needs combined Science and Math help!

SAT Math

ACT Math

The ACT Math covers topics from Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. While the test is certainly checking for content knowledge, it also checks for a certain level of ability to manipulate the material. Though a calculator is allowed, all questions are designed to be done without, and usually with less effort or the same as typing into the calculator. Time should be set aside for practicing problems both ways. Unless the problem indicates in some manner that you will be rounding, all answers will be exactly one of the options. If you are even a little off, it is probably not the answer.

I've been working in a software engineering company for the past 11 years. I write programs that automatically test other software. I used C++ and Java mainly. I've helped write software on the side too.

Working on my MD degree, I have taken USMLE step 1 and step 2 CS/CK. I have been teaching subjects in medicine for 2+ years. I have also mentored a few students on how to study for these exams and how to achieve the necessary scores they need to get into the residency they want. Getting a high score on the USMLE exams requires hard work but getting tutoring and mentoring will help you study efficiently so you can concentrate on the clinical experience. I am a medical school graduate working on postdoc medical research at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. I started tutoring mathematics and science at the university at California, San Diego where I received my undergraduate bachelors of science in Computer Science and Engineering with a minor in mathematics.
