Enthusiastic Tutor of Classics and History

I derive fulfillment from helping struggling students succeed. I use questions to guide my students as they think through the material so that they are the ones discovering the answer. My job is to help the student not only master the subject's content but also become a self-learner. This is especially important in our evolving economy which requires professionals to learn new skills and to change careers multiple times. American History

In addition to taking courses in American history, philosophy, religion, and government at the collegiate level, I have taught American history at the high school level.

European History

I took courses in European history in college. I have taught high school level courses covering European history and emphasizing primary sources. I am comfortable tutoring students on topics ranging from the Fall of the Western Roman Empire to modern European philosophy and religion, from feudalism to the World Wars.

Latin

I am passionate about helping students master and enjoy Latin. I have taught Latin from the elementary through the high school level for four years. I have taught and tutored students through Cicero, Caesar, Vergil, the Vulgate, Eutropius, Nepos, and Augustine. When I studied Latin at the collegiate level, I read Vergil (Book I), Pliny (selections), Cicero (In Verrem), Livy (selections and Book XXXIX), and Lucan (Books II and VIII). I devote considerable effort in developing exercises that help struggling students overcome their specific problem. In addition to building up student's grammar and reading comprehension, I emphasize thinking about the ideas in the texts we read. This instills a love for Latin, which usually improves their grades and grasp of the language.

SAT Reading

As a writing and history teacher, I have spent a lot of time developing strategies to help my students grow in their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and proofreading skills. I teach students what sorts of questions to ask and important signpost words to look for as they read. When students struggle, I spend time helping the student to work through texts that they misunderstood and questions they missed so that they can identify their error and learn from their mistakes. Though I have attained great success in the reading and writing portions of standardized tests, that success did not come easily. I believe that success depends on learning from mistakes and am a patient tutor.

SAT Writing

As a successful speech coach and debate, I have a lot of experience training students to develop and write strong, persuasive arguments. As a teacher, I also have helped my students develop strong proofreading skills. Though I have attained great success in the reading and writing portions of standardized tests, that success did not come easily. I believe that success depends on learning from mistakes and am a patient tutor.

Classics

I studied history focusing my studies on Roman and Greek history and classical languages at Patrick Henry College and attained highest honors. I have taught Latin and classical history at Aquidneck Island Christian Academy grades 3-10 (2013-present). At the middle school level my students translate and discuss the Vulgate, Eutropius, and Nepos, and at the high school level they translate and discuss Caesar, Virgil, Cicero, and Augustine. I also have extensive experience teaching Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Plutarch, Suetonius, and Church Fathers.
