Elementary (K-6th)

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education and Special Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8). As a current Reading Specialist at Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School, I work with students in grades 5-8 supporting predominantly in reading and writing but also offer math and science support. For four years, I have worked with a family whose twins are now in 7th grade. We meet 1-2 times a week and since they were in 4th grade, I supported with instruction in all subjects. I have also worked with a family with children in grades 3 and 6 who have needed support in reading, writing and math. In previous experiences, I have also tutored early elementary students!

Special Needs

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8), and will be receiving Certification in the Wilson Reading System program in June. At that time, I will also be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Special Education by the Relay Graduate School of Education. My work at Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School (and all previous school settings) is geared towards supporting exceptional learners with learning disabilities, attention, and behavioral challenges (10+ years). I am well-versed with creating specialized instruction bases on IEP goals, student strengths and areas of growth. I have experience tutoring students who have exceptional needs, IEPS, and/or 504 plans.

ADHD

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8), and will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Special Education by the Relay Graduate School of Education in June. For 10+ years, I have worked with students whose IEPs or 504 plans indicate a need in attention and at times, behavior modification. When planning, I consider the types of accommodations that I can provide to make learning easier for students with ADHD and appropriate interventions that help to head off behaviors that disrupt concentration or distract from the task at hand. I have designed specialized instruction based on best practices learned in both graduate school and professional development seminars where ADHD was the focus. I also consider supports that will help students to focus and achieve their goals such as the use of timers, wiggle seats, positive incentive systems, visuals, brain breaks, etc. I also have experience tutoring students who have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8), and will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Special Education by the Relay Graduate School of Education in June. In my coursework at graduate school, a unit of study focused on ASD. This work included learning about the varied profiles of students with ASD, tackling common misconceptions, and learning how needs present themselves in sensory, social, behavioral, and academic domains. I learned strategies to instruct and support students with ASD, and practiced applying these strategies to my classroom with students whose IEPs indicate that they are diagnosed with ASD.

Dyslexia

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8), and will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Special Education by the Relay Graduate School of Education in addition to Level 1 Certification for the Wilson Reading System (WRS). WRS is a program that uses teaching methods that are effective with students with dyslexia to meet the goal of helping individuals to become independent readers. My work at Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School (and all previous school settings) is geared towards supporting exceptional learners - many whose IEPs indicate particular needs because of dyslexia (10+ years). I am well-versed with creating specialized instruction bases on IEP goals, student strengths and areas of growth. I also have experience tutoring students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia.

Hard of Hearing

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8), and will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Special Education by the Relay Graduate School of Education in June. My work at Girls Prep Lower East Side Middle School (and all previous school settings) is geared towards supporting exceptional learners who receive related services for hearing and speech (10+ years). I am well-versed with creating specialized instruction bases on IEP goals, student strengths and areas of growth. I also have experience tutoring students who have been diagnosed with needs in the area of hearing. Many of my current students use assistive technology as well!

Common Core

I have been awarded master's degrees in Childhood Education and Special Education, hold certificates in both Elementary (1-6) and Middle Education (5-8). I have designed and implemented math and ELA lessons based on Common Core State Standards since 2009 (prior to their official release) and have also relied on the Next Generation Science Standards for science. Similarly, I plan tutoring sessions using the grade-level aligned CCSS and NGSS for all subjects. I also worked at Amplify for 2.5 years building a digital CCSS-aligned curriculum for ELA, math, and science. Lastly, I have attended multiple professional development training sessions on CCSS and feel confident in my expert ability to backward plan instruction based on Common Core State Standards.
