My experience teaching and tutoring high school students in English spans 36 years. I am a retired teacher who has taught all levels of ability; I specialized in the teaching of grammar and writing, as well as proofreading and revision skills. During my teaching career, if any teaching colleagues had tough grammar questions, they came to me for answers. During high school and college, I won awards and received special training and accolades for my performance in grammar. I love and understand it. I have taught it every year of my career.
I have taught writing to students of all ability levels, from grades 7-12. I can assist any student in performing to the best of his or her ability when writing essays, reports, research papers, or any other academic document. Many of my former students have had great success in local and national writing contests, as well as achievement in admissions to their chosen universities.
I have experience teaching literary analysis, terms, genres, authors, etc. I have successfully taught Shakespearean plays, novels, poetry, and nonfiction. I can provide reading strategies to improve comprehension, vocabulary, and speed.
I have read and/or taught most significant pieces of traditional American literature, including the works of Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Twain, Crane, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Hughes, Cullen, Dunbar, Walker, Millay,Updike, and many others.
I have edited and proofread students' papers, colleagues' papers, professional publications, etc., for my entire adult life. My understanding of grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary add to my skills here.
