I sat for the CFA Level 1 exam in 2002, and got my charter in 2004 after I passed Level 3.
The series 7 exam is the general knowledge exam given to stock brokers. I actually passed this exam when I first entered the industry in the 90s. I also earned my CFA charter in 2004. This is a designation that required 3 6 hour exams given once a year. The material is equivalent to a Masters degree with an emphasis on Finance and capital markets.
