Post bacc neuroscientist; qualified tutor with 3 years experience

I completed my Bachelor of Science with Highest Honors in Psychology degree at the University of North Carolina, where I graduated with distinction and with minors in Computer Science and Neuroscience. I currently work as a post bacc neuroscientist at a research institution in the area. I tutored as a part-time job all through college, working with children age 12+ and adult learners, in both online and virtual classroom settings. My standardized test scores on AP tests, the SAT, and the GRE ... [more]

Algebra 1

I have three years of experiencing tutoring algebra 1, working primarily with 7th to 9th grade students, in both in-person and virtual classroom settings. As a scientist, I use math (particularly statistics) in my day-to-day work--and this math builds on the fundamental skills used in intermediate math topics like those taught in algebra 1.

Algebra 2

I have three years of experiencing tutoring algebra 2, working primarily with high school students, in both in-person and virtual classroom settings. As a scientist, I use math (particularly statistics) in my day-to-day work--and this math builds on the fundamental skills used in intermediate math topics like those taught in algebra 2.

Grammar

I have writing experience across several domains: fiction, literary essays, and scientific reports. I've always had an affinity for grammar--I even read Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style" for fun as a child. Now as a scientist, I frequently must write lengthy reports of my work; in 2017, I received a degree with Highest Honors due to my thesis work, which produced a 40-page manuscript. My test scores also reflect my ability to write well: I obtained perfect scores on SAT Writing, GRE Verbal Reasoning, and GRE Analytical Writing.

Geometry

I have three years of experiencing tutoring geometry, working primarily with 7th to 10th grade students, in both in-person and virtual classroom settings.

Statistics

As a scientist who works in a laboratory setting, I am regularly required to run complex statistics on the data I collect. This provides me with unique insight into the "what"s and "how"s of statistics. Combined with my three years' teaching experience in statistics and my own proven track record (e.g., perfect score on the AP Statistics exam), I'm excellent choice as a statistics tutor for your student.

English

I have writing experience across several domains: fiction, literary essays, and scientific reports. In college, I consistently scored high in essay-dense classes, and as a scientist, I frequently must write lengthy reports of my work; in 2017, I received a degree with Highest Honors due to my thesis work, which produced a 40-page manuscript. My test scores also reflect my ability to write well: I obtained perfect scores on SAT Writing, GRE Verbal Reasoning, and GRE Analytical Writing.

Psychology

In 2017, I obtained my B.S. with Highest Honors in Psychology, which is rated #13 in national Psychology programs by the prestigious U.S. News ranking system. As a researcher, I have a practical background in psychology: I work very regularly with human subjects, behavioral experiments etc. As a student, I have excellent test scores in this area, notably scoring a perfect 5 in AP Psychology. As a tutor, I try to combine my experience in the classroom, both as a teacher and a student, with my experience in the lab to make lessons fulfilling and educational.

SAT Math

I have two years of experiencing tutoring SAT Math, working in both in-person and virtual classroom settings. As a scientist, I use math) in my day-to-day work-- and this math builds on the fundamental skills used in intermediate math topics like those tested on the Math section of the SAT, so you can be sure your student is being taught by someone with a firm practical background in math. Additionally, when I took the SAT myself, I scored in the 95th percentile (720/800) following self-tutoring.

SPSS

During my undergraduate training, I took multiple upper level classes on statistical analysis using SPSS, and I also have used SPSS extensively in my own research. As a result, I am skilled in the various aspects of the program, from menu-based analyses to graphing to console programming. I'm happy to help you learn how to use SPSS for any of your statistics needs.

SAT Reading

As a child, I loved reading, and it has continued to be a subject in which I do well academically, even at the college level. I draw on my experiences as a student and my three years as a tutor to inform my teaching style as I interact with my students and prepare them for the SAT. My test scores also reflect my test-taking ability: I scored in the 99th percentile on the old SAT (780/800) and perfectly on the comparable portion of the Graduate Record Exam (170/170). It's important that your student receive training geared towards the "new" SAT, released in 2016; I have tutored multiple students in this new format so far.

SAT Writing

I have writing experience across several domains: fiction, literary essays, and scientific reports. As a scientist, I frequently must write lengthy reports of my work; in 2017, I received a degree with Highest Honors due to my thesis work, which produced a 40-page. My test scores also reflect my ability to write well: I obtained perfect scores on SAT Writing, GRE Verbal Reasoning, and GRE Analytical Writing. I have worked with numerous students in the long and short term to help them improve their SAT test-taking skills and achieve their score goals.

Probability

As a scientist who works in a laboratory setting, I am regularly required to run complex statistics on the data I collect. This provides me with unique insight into the "what"s and "how"s of statistics, including probability mechanisms, formulas, etc. Combined with my three years' teaching experience in statistics and my own proven track record (e.g., perfect score on the AP Statistics exam, which includes probability concepts), I'm excellent choice as a probability tutor for your student.

I have routinely used JavaScript to create stimulus display programs for my participants and am very familiar with the language. I am especially skilled at modifying layout, div content, GUIs, etc. with JS, D3.JS, and JSON. Demo programs of my work are available upon request.
