James is the name, Culture is my game. I graduated cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin in 2016 with a BA in the rigorous Plan II Honors program and a certificate in Digital Arts and Media and Creative Writing. I went to college to learn as much as I could about the world, but I thought I could learn more. So I taught English in South Korea for a year. It was hard work, and very different from teaching English in America, but I learned a lot about teaching and I developed my own s... [more]

Writing

I've been writing creatively since 7th grade, and I carried over this passion for writing all the way to college, writing short stories, poetry, and even video game narratives in service of my certificate in Creative Writing. In the Plan II Program, a liberal arts honors major, I wrote essays on a variety of subjects, including history, archaeology, philosophy, biology, and psychology, and I've developed a keen critical eye for structure and argument. As a result, I can speak with equal effectiveness on creative and essay writing, including structure, argumentation, and proofreading techniques.

English

From July 2016-2017, I taught English at a private academy/kindergarten in South Korea called Suncheon Wonderland. During that time, I gained a working knowledge of teaching the English language to students aged 3-12, and I'm confident in my ability to carry that over to students in America. I also worked for a certificate in Creative Writing in college, through which I honed the English skills of an avid reader and writer into deep-seated instincts and teachable trade. As a result, I can work with students young and old on Grammar, Spelling, Reading, Phonics, Vocabulary, and Writing, among other English skills.

ESL/ESOL

In April of 2016, I attained a certificate to teach English as a second language and as a foreign language (ESL/TEFL). From July 2016-2017, I taught English at a private academy/kindergarten in South Korea called Suncheon Wonderland. During that time, I gained a working knowledge of teaching the English language to students aged 3-12. I also speak some Spanish and French, but it will largely be ignored in the lessons themselves. My ESL skills can cover basic Phonics and Vocabulary all the way up to Creative/Essay Writing, depending on the level of the student.

World History

I have had a lifelong passion for history. In 2016, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Plan II Honors, a liberal arts program that covered philosophy, psychology, as well as African, European, and Asian history. The program culminated in a thesis I wrote about warfare in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Before college, I received a 5 on every AP social studies test I took, including Human Geography, US History, World History, and Government. My history lessons will generally focus on review, study skills, and critical understanding of key trends and events.

Social Studies

I have had a lifelong passion for social studies. In 2016, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Plan II Honors, a liberal arts program that covered philosophy, psychology, history, and literature. The program culminated in a thesis I wrote about warfare in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Before college, I received a 5 on every AP social studies test I took, including Human Geography, US History, World History, and Government. My social studies lessons will generally focus on review, study skills, and putting together a general knowledge of the subject that will carry over to future classes.
