Hi, I?m Sydney! When I was six, I took it upon myself to teach my younger brother how to read. I loved reading and wanted to share the ?magical world? of storytelling with him. It was then I discovered my love for teaching- seeing students? eyes light when they finally get it! The cliched ?aha!? moment that brings me and the student a shared pride and sense of accomplishment. I graduated from my competitive high school Cum Laude. I?m a National AP Scholar, meaning I got a 4 or higher o... [more]
I have an extensive vocabulary due to my love of reading and writing. I studied Latin for 7 years and received a 4 on the AP exam, giving me a great foundation for English foundation as many words are derived directly from Latin. I've also scored consistently well on the PSAT, ACT, and AP Exam vocabulary sections.
Whether you need help with learning to read, reading comprehension for a standardized test, or reading for English analytical purposes, I'm your tutor! I've had a love for reading from such a young age, that I taught my little brother how to read when I was only six and he was only two. I've gotten an A in every essay/story-based class I've taken and been extremely successful with standardized tests.
Writing was my first love and continues to be my passion. I'm personally familiar with many different writing styles and genres. My creative writing has won awards in the Scholastic Arts and Writing competition and I've taken two college fiction and poetry intensive workshops. My primary major is print/digital journalism and in the field, I've had a few entertainment pieces published and have been an intern at the same company for two years. My senior year, I wrote a 50-page formal research paper and annotated bibliography. I also won awards for my personal essays and creative nonfiction in the Scholastic Arts and Writing competition.
My senior year of high school I took three English classes just because I had the room. One was an elective on short stories, one was AP Literature, and the other was an independent study I created myself covering journalism, creative nonfiction, and creative writing (I came in an hour early for this class). I received a 5 on both the AP Literature and English Language Exam and a 35 on both the English and Reading sections of the ACT. I received my school's English Book Award my senior year of high school as well.
Government & Politics
I'm currently minoring in Politics at NYU having taken classes in US politics, democratic political theory, and comparative politics. I scored a 5 on both the AP US History and US Government exams. I was on the leadership board of my debate team on which I debated broad topics such as the next president to more specific topics such as the effects of tipping and the incarceration of Chelsea Manning. I was a member of Model UN for five years, receiving "Best Delegate" twice, and also won "Best Delegate" at the Harvard Model Congress where I represented Homeland Security in the President's Cabinet.
One of my favorite stories I like to tell is the time I created a 40-foot timeline out of post-it notes for my AP World History exam. About forty hours later, thankfully, I scored a 5. Not only do I have a comprehensive knowledge of world history but I have a passion for the subject and related subjects that help me better provide context to students. I'm currently minoring in politics which had led me to taking specialized courses in the history of democratic political theory and the history of comparative governments around the world.
I love editing essays, as weird as that may sound, because I love seeing writing transformations. Just a word or two can change the meaning of a sentence and that's super interesting to me. I have edited formal research papers, fiction, poetry, journalism articles, and personal essays - all of which have ended up being very successful.
As an avid reader and writer, I've spent a lot of passive time sharpening my spelling abilities. I've also scored consistently well on the PSAT, ACT, and AP Exam sections that involve spelling. Auto-correct annoys me while texting and emailing, so I have it turned off on my phone and laptop. I've found that since turning it off, my spelling has actually improved because I've had to be more conscious of it.
I studied piano for six years, guitar for four years, drums for one year, and voice for eight years (private lessons, choir, musical theatre). I have a strong knowledge of musical theory and can sightread notes and chords. I learned through the Faber Piano Adventures system and completed all five levels. I can also play chords and tabs on the acoustic guitar.
I began studying piano when I was seven. I took private lessons, studying the Faber Piano Adventures system. After completing all five levels of the program, I continued my classical piano education and began to study more contemporary music as well. I can sightread sheet music and love the singer-songwriter genre which I performed in local concerts.
I've studied and have extensive knowledge of musical theatre (incl. dance), monologues, viewpoints, Shakespeare, children's theatre, and improv. I've also studied commedia dell arte and masks. I've performed in blackbox theatres, Broadway-style stages, and done theatre-in-the-round. I've rewritten Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" into a play set in the 1950s and also have written numerous monologues. I have backstage costuming, hair, and makeup experience. I've fostered all of these skills in performances as well as in the classroom.
I've been a dancer for nine years, seven of which have been spent studying ballet. I've taken master classes from American Ballet Theatre teachers and adult classes at the Joffrey Ballet School. Not only do I have knowledge of ballet but also the strengthening needed to progress in the sport. I've performed in pieces from the Cinderella, Swan Lake, and one that was a fusion of Latin dance and ballet.
I worked at the Macy's cosmetics counter for one year selling products and providing "makeovers" to clients. I was part of my high school's costuming, makeup, and hair team for the theatre department for four years (two plays per year). I've done freelance work for competition dancers, figure skaters, and models.
I used Microsoft Outlook to manage my email and schedule all throughout middle and high school. I'm extremely familiar with creating email lists/groups and linking everyone to the same calendar. I know how to manage and organizes contacts and the best ways to archive/save emails you don't want to lose.
I've used Microsoft Publisher numerous times for school and for internships. I'm familiar with all pre-designed layouts though I specialize in designing brochures and newsletters. I've helped design and execute newsletters for high school and college clubs.
I studied Latin for seven years, scoring a 4 on the AP Latin Exam. In my studies, I read The Aeneid and The Gallic Wars in the original Latin. I've taken numerous courses on Greco-Roman history including ones focused on art history, philosophy, democratic political theory, and culture. I've tutored middle schoolers in Latin, both the language and ancient Roman culture.
