Systems Engineer with 4+ years teaching high school STEM, Credentialed

I absolutely love science, especially chemistry and physics. My bachelors degree is in chemistry and I was one class away from a minor in geology and physics at Humboldt State University in California. In my sophomore year, to help pay for college, I started tutoring college students in calculus, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Tutoring was such a fun experience I decided to attend the accelerated teaching credential program at California State University, Northridge, where I gradua... [more]

Algebra 1

I have been teaching and tutoring college and high school level chemistry and calculus for over 8 years. In order to understand the higher level concepts, a firm grasp on algebra is necessary. All classes and tutoring sessions have started with the same question regarding algebra skills and how to improve on them.

Biology

Many college students change their major and I am no exception. My first choice for a degree was Biology but changed it to Chemistry after finding scientific mathematics more interesting. In high school I took every biology based class including anatomy and physiology and sports medicine and still have my notes and books from those classes because of how interesting they are. I have taught regular, honors, and AP biology for 3 years and have found great online resources for those who prefer to dissect creatures over the internet instead of in real life.

Chemistry

My degree is in chemistry and have taught and tutored general and organic chemistry for over 8 years. This subject is my absolute favorite and am always finding new things to try in laboratories and even at home using the formulas. As a teacher, I expect work to be shown for all calculations and in depth answers to open ended questions. Even as a tutor I will expect that type of work but make exceptions for diverse learners and help those who need to find alternate methods to show for full credit on assignments or exams.

Physics

Physics is my second favorite subject and am always finding new things to try in laboratories and even at home using the formulas. As a teacher, I expect work to be shown for all calculations and in depth answers to open ended questions. Even as a tutor I will expect that type of work but make exceptions for diverse learners and help those who need to find alternate methods to show for full credit on assignments or exams.

Prealgebra

I have been teaching and tutoring college and high school level chemistry and calculus for over 8 years. In order to understand the higher level concepts, a firm grasp on algebra is necessary. All classes and tutoring sessions have started with the same question regarding algebra skills and how to improve on them.

Astronomy

Astronomy has always been one of the most intriguing subjects and I have taught astronomy for 4 years as the second half of geology classes. I worked with NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory education department closely for improving resources in the classroom.

Physical Science

During the teacher credential program, I student taught physical science at the middle school level and then tutored the subject for 2 years privately. Physical science is the combination of chemistry and physics which are my absolute favorite subjects and use mathematic equations. Last year I taught a high school freshman class with low math skills and at the end of the year 90% of them passed the class to continue to biology their sophomore year.

Geology

I was one class away from earning a minor in geology in college. Geology is such an interesting subject because you can see examples of it every day without a microscope. I taught geology for 4 years at the high school level using pictures from hikes and students bringing in their own pictures to analyze.
